My Take:

When I first heard that John Bannon had agreed to do a monthly column on card magic for Genii Magazine, I could hardly wait. And, yes, it was worth the wait. John is one of the premier people creating easy to do card magic today. His Move Zero DVD set was one of my all time favorites. If you have read his column you might already be doing some of this material. If not, it is time to start.

If you are familiar with the Move Zero series, you know that they are composed of tricks that require no sleight of hand. This new DVD does not make that claim but the sleights are all within the average magician’s capability. The toughest one might be a bottm deal that is used several times. However, it is made from a small packet with renders is fairly simple to accomplish.

In addition to the six routines from Genii, you are taught two moves and a routine that was originally given free to purchasers of the Move Zero series. Easy to do and real foolers.

Here is what you have to look forward to.

Heart of Glass – John has combined Jack Carpenter’s “Touch My Heart” and Peter Duffie’s “Crystal Clear Transposition”. An ace placed on top of a glass switches positions with a Queen placed under it. Two methods are taught with the second being the easier. There is a slight discrepancy but it should fly right by your spectator.

Cross Eyed Jacks – Two Jacks are shown with an ace between them. A card is chosen and laid on the table. The Jack sandwich is placed into the deck. When card on table is turned over, it is now the ace. The sandwich is removed form the deck and now the selection is between them. Nice method with timing that hides the switch.

Rendezvous – A card is lying face down on the table. It is explained that this is the Perfect Stranger card. A card is selected and lost in the deck. Two queens are shown, one black (a brunette)and one red (blonde). The magician says he has made an error and restarts the trick. Perfect Stranger card is shown to be the selection. The restart disguises the dirty work. Very nice and entertaining routine. You are also taught the Conflexion Control

Queenpins – Selected card is lost into deck. Queens have previously been put aside. Spectator chooses either black or red and these queens are put aside. The other pair is cut into the deck. The magician shuffles the deck and explains that he sometimes shuffles a card between the queens. It would be impressive if this was the selected card. When the deck is spread, there are two cards between the queens., These are shown to be the other pair of queens. The cards set aside have changed into the selection.

Uprising – This is a very nice small packet elevator trick. Three spot cards and the Ace though four of clubs are shown. The next card is sequence rises to the top of each of four packets. When last packet is turned over, all four of the clubs have assembled in this packet. So, this is a two-for-one. You get both an elevator routine and an assembly.

Well Tempered Aces – Very nice assembly routine using only eight cards instead of the usual sixteen. J.K. Hartman’s Elmsley variation is taught.

Now for the bonuses.

Hybrid Holdout featuring the Bullet Catch Production. You are taught the move and given a routine that uses it. However, this is a nice utility move that can be adapted to a lot of effects.  In the routine taught, the magician and the spectator each takes a small packet of cards and shuffles them. The spectator takes a second pack and shuffles them adding to the original pile. This is done one more times. The deck is cut several times, each time outjogging the card. These are shown to be the four aces. Easy to do and very subtle.

Double Dutch Cut - Very nice false cut based loosely on the Jay Ose count. You will get away with this one!

There are a number of routines that are performance only at the end as trailers for different projects. Some from the Move Zero series, one from Fractalicious and one from the Bullet Party. Sizzle and Twisted Sister are both demonstrated. Although not explained, I enjoyed watching the videos just to see John work.

Conclusion: Big Blind consistently delivers a quality product and this is not exception. If you are a Bannon fan, you already know this is a must have. If you are not familiar with him, this would be a good introduction. It might even get you to subscribe to Genii so you can see what he has in store next.
