  • My Take:
  • There's an old joke that asks what is the difference between a magician and a large pizza? The answer ...A large pizza can feed a family of four. Ha Ha. Cute. Unless that magician is you.

When I first saw the title Wealthy Magician I thought "Now there's an oxymoron." But that was before I read the book. By utilizing time honored business strategies, Richy Roy has come up with a plan that would work if you have the skills and determination to make it work.

The book is divided into three sections:

    1) Price Tag - This section has the feel of many self help books that I have seen. A lot of the strategies make you see just why you are worth your asking price. How to determine the price of your show. How to determine if you have a viable business at the price you are charging. He also addresses why lowering your price just to get a job not only devalues your worth, it also is detrimental to other magicians working in your area. I think the worth the price thinking in this also justifies the $50 price tag on this book.

    2) Marketing - Covers subjects such as types of clients, using different types of social media to spread the word, use of a mailing list and the value of knowing just who you are before starting the journey.

    3) Sales - The majority of this section deals with negotiations on how to get your price and convince your client to offer the job. Mr. Roy does suggest that you do further reading on the subject as his book is not a comprehensive study of the techniques.

He offers a reading list at the end of the book to supplement any area you would like to learn more about.

When I first saw the book, the price tag seemed excessive to me. Then I started thinking how much it would cost me to have just one meeting with a business consultant and the price suddenly seemed more within range.

Richy Roy has provided us with a valid plan to actually make a living as a full time magician. This is not a book for amateurs (unless you would just like it on your shelf). In order for this book to benefit you, you must have a great show, a great personality and be willing to put in the time to follow his suggestions.

The one complaint I have is that he needs a much better proofreader. Grammatical errors and typos are pretty rampant through.the book. This does not detract from the information imparted. If you meet the criteria for the right reader, this could be a valuable tool for you.
