Jumping Gem Pen – Jeff Prace $9.95 http://www.murphysmagic.com/product.aspx?id=57861
The Hype:
A modern adaptation of the Jumping Gem! This pen combines one of magic's most iconic paddle tricks and an innocent prop to create a fresh approach to the classic routine.
Presented as an eye exam, a circle jumps all around the pen's body before visually splitting into two! But the eye test does not end there! The text on the pen instantly becomes blurry and can be handed out for examination at the end.
INSIDE THE PACKAGE: -Jumping Gem pen -Additional pen for kicker ending -Video instructions by Genii columnist Jeff Prace
My Take:
Like Joshua Jay, Jeff Prace managed to get his name known as a creator at an early age. As he matures, he continues to put out new and clever ideas. And sometimes he takes something old and gives it a new coat of paint.
Almost all of us are not only familiar with the paddle moves but probably have a paddle trick somewhere in our possessions. Jeff loves the move and this is his second release using it. The first was the Search Engine pen. With that, you received one gimmicked pen and one normal pen to pass out. This time you get two pens, both gimmicked for two different endings. So, in my opinion, this actually gives you twice the magic as his first release for the same money. More bang for the buck. Jeff prefers the pen idea to the traditional paddle as he feels this presentation is more organic.
Instruction is in an upbeat video download. Jeff always looks like he is having a ball in his videos and the energy makes it a lot more fun. The pens look like the free advertising pens that you can pick up at your doctor. And can be handed out after.
I would not consider this a blockbuster effect. Jeff basically recycles an old beginner trick. But he adds a clever new twist to it. I almost always carry a pen with me and it is usually just an ordinary pen. That is about to change. Most magicians constantly have people asking them to do a little something. Whip this out of your pocket and you are ready to go. The presentation is cute and fun to do.
And a trick with two props for only ten bucks? This is a no brainer. Get it.
