My Take:

Josh has already proven his name in making beginner books with “Magic - The Complete Course” and “Big Magic for Little Hands” both of which have spaces on my bookshelf. Although this is listed as “beginner” you are taught things that I had never seen before in a book for this level.

The book itself is a high quality hardback with a little something extra. Back in the day, young girls would write their innermost secrets in their diary which was protected by a small padlock (I am sure some of you got our first practical experience in lock picking to see just what your sister was up to and what good blackmail info you could get.) Well, this book comes locked with a small padlock to keep your secrets safe from prying eyes.

The material itself is of a much higher quality than you can usually expect from a book for this level. Each trick is rated by difficulty on a scale of 1-5. Fortunately most of the items have a fairly low difficulty rating.

Rolling Wrists - I saw David Copperfield actaully fry a whole theater full of people with this using it for his opening. I, myself, used it once with a church group and it killed. Plus, it is totally impromptu and perfect when you don’t have a single prop with you. It is also easy to do.

I was very surprised to see “Heightened Senses” included. This has been a lecture item for Josh so you know he is tipping something special here. I have seen a ring meeting devastated by what is essentially a very simple trick. This is one you will be adding to your show.

Then you are taught the classic karate coin using a cracker instead of a coin which allows you to just eat the evidence (kind of difficult when you are using a coin)

If you do card in orange you are sure to love card in banana.

I have always liked the “Slippery Sleeves” plot where you take off your jacket and when you pull your arm out, you are holding a open glass of liquid. Barry Richardson did this in his lecture in Boston and I have seen restaurant magicians do it. Dan Tong pulls a glass of wine from inside of an egg bag.A classic plot and in reading this, you will find out that it is not difficult at all.

If you like “Scotch and Soda”, you will definitely enjoy “Fugitive Coin” which seems to me to be a gimmickless version. However, David Roth is credited as the creator. Either way, a stunning piece of magic from your pocket.

Haven’t tried “Change Machine” yet but I will as soon as I get the chance. This is one clever way to change a selected card into the one you need. You just stick the wrong card into the bill slot of a drink machine, wait a bit and when the machine rejects the playing card as not being a valid bill, you will find that the card has been changed into the right one. For me, this is worth the price of the entire book.

Like Bob Hummer’s work? Then you will have fun with “Heads or Tails”  and “Note Way"’.

Along with a few other new pieces, some familiar plots surface. Ring and String. the Out to Lunch principle, cut deeper force, cutting to the four aces, torn and restored bill and even more.

This is not the children’s beginner book I expected. It is so much more. If you have a friend with an interest in the art, buy him (or her) a copy. If not, this is a good choice to add to your library.

In my opinion, Andi and Josh have hit another homerun. A book loaded with easy to do magic with great tricks, great photos and outstanding teaching. As usual with products from Vanishing Inc., this is highly recommended.
