Utsukushii – Fraser Parker $40.50 http://www.murphysmagic.com/product.aspx?id=54644
The Hype:
Utsukushii, the billet-less pin reveal, is a sure fire way to guess a single digit number someone is only thinking of, without anything having to be written down or props of any kind. It can then be used to work out other numbers such as pin codes, phone locks and entire phone numbers. If you would like to be able to reveal the pin numbers of strangers you meet or guess numbers which only exist as thoughts in a person's mind, using only words, then this method is for you. NO dual reality is used. NO stooges or instant stooges. It can be used close up or on stage with a 100% success rate. It's elegant, it's clean and it's direct.
Key Points:
It can be used anytime, anywhere!
It's a prop-less effect.
No stooges are used.
It's easy to perform.
It's a solid method. Pages: 15 - A5 size - saddle-stitch binding, full-gloss color cover
My Take:
We’ve all been there. At a party or even just walking down the street. You run into someone who knows you are a magician and they want to see a trick. You check your pockets. No decks and no coins. There are not many really good tricks you can do with zero props. Enter Utsukushii.
You receive one of the most attractive looking magic publications that I have ever seen. If you are reading it out in public, there is nothing on the cover to indicate what is inside. The booklet is 16 pages long and very nicely printed with larger type so even the older magi will be able to read it. I have to admit that I Was a bit confused the first time I read the book so I read it again with the same result. Around the third time, everything clicked into place and I was glad that I took the time to understand it.
Adapting an old principle from Annemann allows you to know a single digit number that is only thought of by your audience. This number is then used to generate a four digit number. It could be a pin number but that is discouraged as people would freak out if they knew you had access to their finances. Another suggestion is the unlock code for their cell phone. You could actually take their cell phone, plug in the number and unlock it. This is powerful. In the technological world of today, no one suspects that this could be done. You could actually use any four digit number such as the last four digits of someone’s social security number or just a made up number. This doesn’t matter. Utsukushii will allow you to get the number.
Once you understand the method, it becomes very easy. Fraser says you could make up a cheat sheet if you feel the need but once the method is understood, there is no reason to make one. The procedure is simplicity itself and the best thing is that your spectator actually gives you the code without realizing it. I can’t believe how clever this is.
If I had any negatives at all, it would be the price. For $40.50, all you get is a thin booklet with one trick and no props. We all know that good mentalism effects tend to run more. Kenton Knepper gets quite a bit for his as do many others. This is not a new thing. Mentalists have been doing this for years. On the plus side is that mentalists also tend to get paid a higher rate than the standard magician so a good routine like this is worth the cost.
I like everything about this. The method, the script, the booklet itself. If you are looking for a strong effect that you will always have with you, you can’t go wrong with Utsukushii. And best of all? It takes up no pocket space!
