The Hype:

Are you allowed to play cards at the casino? A question many of us have been asked multiple times. With A Poker Trick, you can now show your spectators exactly how skilled you are and why casinos have you banned for life!

One spectator chooses to become the cheater. The cards are then cut and shuffled. A bet is made and then the cheater deals the cards. The outcome of the game will leave your spectators in awe of your unbelievable card and premonition skills. After performing A Poker Trick, everyone will truly believe you must be banned for life from every casino all over the world! This routine is based on an unpublished idea of Jason England and Sweden's Tomas Blomberg and is used with permission

My Take:

How can you not like a couple of guys who took their name from the Bob Newhart Show. (Of course, with names like Daryl and Darryl how could they be anything else?). This pair has made their name creating quirky and fun tricks that are mostly easy to do. While this one is a straight ahead poker demo it is also easy to do.

The instructional video is almost 47 minutes long. One thing I really like about this video is that they used a demonstrator who had just learned the trick that day and it is still effective. They claim they weren't going to demo it as they are just too silly to be effective but the real reason, I feel, is to let you know if their demonstrator can learn the routine well enough to pull it off the same day he learns it, so can you.

One gimmick is required but you are told exactly how to make it. The was a blooper here. When the instructions are given on making the gimmick a Queen of Hearts is used but in the instruction for the routine, a Queen of Diamonds is used. To make it easier to learn, I just remade the gimmick with the Queen of Diamonds. It makes the learning much less confusing.

You are also taught a second version that requires no gaff in case you are somewhere without a gaff with you. Just a little more complex than the basic routine but still not difficult.

The routine was highly influenced by elements of of Alan Ackerman's Topsy Turvy Poker routine. Some of the ideas were borrowed and others not used but it definitely was an inspiration. The stack took quite a while to figure out and even a computer was used. One trick that has always fried me is Stewart James' Miraskill.. I know it will always come out right but it took me a long time to figure out why. It is one of those tricks that you can fool yourself with. This routine is another. The riffle shuffle is incredibly fair and I have a hard time understanding why it does not completely destroy the stack. The Gilbreath Principle is hard at work here. I first learned of this in an effect by Max Maven. It is a technique that will absolutely destroy anyone you perform for and that carries on admirably in this poker routine. The Brothers do go into detail so you understand just why this works. A very nice explanation of the Gilbreath Principle.

Now I know how it works and it still fools me. This is definitely going to make an appearance at my next ring meeting. The only downside for me is that you are paying $20.00 for a single effect. It might have been a little better priced a bit lower but, as I have said numerous times, I love anything the Brothers put out and this one is a must have. It would not be good for walk around for two reasons. The stack is fairly extensive and the end of the trick is similar enough in each performance that you would not be comfortable having someone from the next table seeing your finale. It would be excellent in a closeup performance though.

This is a definite recommend. Buy it, do it and have fun.
