The Hype:

Five audience tested effects using real casino props. You get casino dice, a deck of casino cards, special made cards, a Vegas cloth bag, a prediction note pad and a DVD showing the effects showing the effects and explaining them.

My Take:

Nice little Vegas-themed package from the Collaborators, Chris Moore and Jim Baize. Five routines are taught with everything needed included.

What you get in the package – A deck of casino cards but each card is from a different casino, a pair of dice from a Vegas casino, a gimmicked notepad, envelope with special cards for “Bet or Bluff”, envelope with special cards for “Chicken Ranch” and a nice little black bag sporting a Vegas logo. This bag comes from Dan and Pauline Tong, who make one of the best egg bags in the business. This bag is not gimmicked but is their usual fine quality. (magicbypauline.com)

Five routines are taught although the package as billed at four effects and one bonus effect. More on the thinking of this later.

First up is What Happens in Vegas The deck is shown to be all different cards with different casino backs on each. The deck is shuffled. The spectator selects a card and it is replaced into the deck which is then placed into the bag. The magician writes a prediction, folds the paper and places it onto the table. The spectator is asked if he remembers which casino is on the back. As he usually doesn’t the deck is dumped onto the table and the spectator is told to remove his card to find out which casino he selected. The card is not in the deck. Te bad is picked up and the card is dumped out. When turned over it is shown to be the casino predicted by the magician.

Bet or Bluff – This is the guys’ handling of Jim Steinmeyer’s Nine Card Principle. Several cards are removed from the deck and put aside. The spectator then selects any card from the balance of the deck. This card is added to the packet. He is given the opportunity to lie or tell the truth when asked which card he selected. After spelling the card and counting down, the last card is the one selected.

Roll On – The deck is shuffled and the magician flips through and “memorizes” it. A pair of dice is rolled to generate a number. The magician names a card and the deck is dealt down to that position. The card named is at that position.

Chances Are – Five cards from different casinos are removed from a small envelope. A poker chip is given to the spectator who drops it on one of the cards trying to find the odd one. When the card is turned over, it is found to be the odd one. Use of an old principle makes this a snap to do.

And now for the bonus effect, Chicken Ranch – This is not an original trick and I think that is why it was considered a bonus. There have been numerous versions of this over the years. You are shown a few cards with photos of beautiful women and by using the Australian shuffle, one is selected as your date. When the spectator tries, he will get an ugly one even though that one was not shown previously. In this version, the cards feature women dressed in scanty lingerie. They work at the Chicken Ranch, which was a notorious bordello in the Vegas area.  The backs of the cards are all illustrated with the familiar Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas logo and an illustration of a showgirl.

This is not blockbuster magic and you won’t have your audience dropping their jaws. However, it is a set you can easily do a Vegas themed multi-phase routine with. One thing I would change is doing the Roll O effect first. This would allow you to do all five effects as one long routine. There is also no knuckle busting move. Every phase is easy to do. I do like the deck with all the casinos, That is something you don’t see and it really sells the Vegas atmosphere.

If you do Las Vegas nights for charities (or whoever) or if you would just like a short act you can do for your poker buddies, you would have fun with this. Plus, the casino deck can be used for most any other routine that warrants it as the deck is not gaffed
