The Hype:

John Bannon’s OMG Super Morigami is a self-contained, self working packet trick that utterly defies explanation. Indeed, the fact that it works may baffle you almost as much as your spectators!!!

You bring out a small packet of playing cards. Each card is from a different casino and each one has a large letter written on the back. You explain that this is your ranking system. You secretly pocket a card from each Casino you visit, and then rate it from A to Z!

The packet is shuffled and cut by you and your spectator! The cards are even mixed face up into face down. To further randomise things, the cards are dealt out and remixed totally at the discretion of your spectator. They make every decision. The packet is a mess of face up and face down cards - and your spectator was the one who decided on the configuration!

Despite this totally hands off procedure the ONLY cards remaining face down are removed to show that they spell LUCKY!

Lucky indeed.

However, it turns out that they were even luckier than they thought. You turn each of the “L-U-C-K-Y” cards face up, revealing a Royal Flush in Spades!

OMG Super Morigami sees John Bannon continuing his epic work in the field of packet tricks. The creator of immense best sellers such as Twisted Sisters, Royal Scam, Buzzkill, Duplicity, Paint It Blank, Spin Doctor and Strangers Gallery has a knack for creating commercial, fun, utterly fooling tricks that you’ll be desperate to get out and perform. And, as an added bonus, this one is totally self working… meaning you can put all your attention of presenting it and soaking up the glory.

My Take:

This is another fine example of just why I am such a huge Bannon fan. Powerful and deceptive magic that is easy to learn and easy to do.

At a session a few years ago, Tony Dunn showed us an effect titled simply Origami. He shuffled the four aces into a packet of other cards, spread them out and let us determine which row or column was flipped. When all the cards had been gathered and spread, only the four aces were face up. Very cool trick Why does it work? I have no idea. After reading the instructions for Morigami, I realized that it had to be a Bannon trick. It does seem to have a bit of Bob Hummert flavor to it.

In Morigami, John has taken the original effect and added things to it that make it it so much more effective. I have seen John do similar things with over routines. He takes it, adds a little something to it and suddenly, you have a whole new trick.

First off, when you get the routine, it is beautifully boxed in a hard case very reminiscent of recent releases from the 1914. The style of packaging adds a note of real class to it. It also gives you a sturdy carrying case to protect your cards.

Instruction is via a 9 page pdf e-book. This gives you everything you might need to perform the trick. A video is not necessary but I do suggest you watch the trailer to see it played out. The set up is a snap and you will do this one the first time you try it (so long as you follow the instructions.)

John usually likes to tell the background on his tricks and this is no different. He  references this to an effect in his "Six Impossible Things". Fortunately I have this one on my shelf and checked back. It seems to be a version of his "Four-Fold Foresight" but his new added touches put its into a different class. In the original writeup, he also mentioned "Folding Space" by R. Shane in his book "Automata". I love it when this happens, I not only had his book on my shelf, I have a copy of "automata".  I am all set!

The different colored backs of all the casino cards makes this into very visual eye candy. That plus a procedure that no one will be able to figure out should have it make an appearance in your next show. Once you understand the principle, you should be able to come up with variations of you own (such as the one with the aces from Tony Dunn).

It should not come as a surprise to you to learn that this is my current favorite trick. John Bannon is a card god and always puts out great material. The last generation had Nick Trost for this type of material but we have John. Not a bad trade off at all.

Obviously, this rates a highly recommended, This is one you will play with and have fun with and it even might fool you.
