Liam Montier and Big Blind Media have really made a name for themselves releasing DVD’s on self-working card magic over the last few years. Each new volume seems to outdo the previous. And with someone like John Bannon in front of the camera, well, it just does not get better than that. When Volume 1 was released, there were nothing but superlatives in every discussion across the web. Every trick was as good as some that other companies released as one trick DVD’s. This, of course, made it one of the best magic values around.

I was sure Volume 1 could not be topped.  Oh, ye of little faith! Bannon has done it again! Hallelujah! This is one great collection of card tricks that require no knucklebusting moves. No gaffs (although John teaches a couple of crimp techniques that will be required for one or two of the effects.) There is one thing that did disturb me as I began watching the DVD and that was John’s extensive use of both the Balducci Cross Cut Force and the Jay Ose False Cut. Most everyone is familiar with the Cross Cut Force and if you don’t know the Ose Cut, you should and this will teach you. As John went through trick after trick using these techniques, it finally sunk in on me why this was a valuable thing. Although the same techniques are used, the trick, plot and outcome are different. It takes a very creative magician to create such variation in using the same basic elements. But don’t worry. He teaches some other very good things along the way. The down under deal, Gilbreath’s Second Principle, the Probability Cull, sunken key card and just his attitude and philosophy. I think this could inspire viewers to create some new things from basic elements themselves. If not, you have some great stuff here and it is all easy to do.

Some of the tricks can be done “right out of the box.” After watching the DVD once, I have performed “Pedal to the Metal” for three groups where it absolutely killed each and every time. A couple are more involved but are worth the extra effort.  John’s teaching technique is flawless and complete. You will have no questions after watching the video. As always, his crediting is extensive, not only for the elements he uses but also for the inspiration for each trick.

Speaking of tricks, let’s take a look at them.

51 Fat Chances – A self-working Open Prediction effect utilizing the Cross Cut Force. Don’t think this would fool a magician but it will slay the public.

Leverage – I am not normally a fan of indicator card effects but this requires no setup and the procedure is well hidden. I will be using this one.

Tiny Contrary Killer – Brilliant simplified version of Kenton Knepper’s Kolossal Killer that requires only two cards.

Pedal to the Metal – Currently my favorite trick. You will have it down after one view. Two new techniques are taught here. The Pedal Force and the Probablilty Cull, neither requiring any moves.

Matchismo – Nice number prediction using Gilbreath’s Second Principle

Chronic – In the hands clock-type trick utilizing the reverse Faro.

Dead Reckoning – The spectator has full control of the cut, looks at the top card and buries it in the other half of the deck where the performer spells to it. Self working and  best of all? Instant reset.

AK47 – From a shuffled deck, a card merely thought of is found. This one is rather involved and you will probably want to take notes as you learn it but it is a very powerful effect.

Bannon’s Triumph – After a face-up and facedown shuffle, the spectator is asked the suit of her card. The deck is spread and every card in that suit are the only ones face-up. Not only that but the entire suit is in order with the only missing card being the selected one. One of the easiest Triumphs you will ever do.

Free Willy – John’s fortuneteller friend Esmeralda has given him a written prediction which accurately names the selected card. Corbuzier’s Free Will trick is listed as an inspiration.

Conclusion: A lot of magicians issue a multiple DVD set all at once. I feel this gives you too much to try to learn at once and quite often means some of the magic is not up to the quality of the others. By releasing one disk at a time, John not only gives you the time to really absorb his lessons but actually puts you into a position where you just can’t wait for the next disk to be released. Not only makes the material more accessible but a brilliant marketing strategy. Buy this and be prepared to give up a few evenings.
