  • My Take:

Over the past few years, Sansmind has been building its reputation in the magic field using three premises.

  • Its hyper-caffeinated over-the-top pitchmen/demonstators Who some find annoying (guilty) but I am sure some (especially the younger among us) enjoy.
  • Highly visual magic demos that are reminiscent of CGI special effects and are accomplished with the aid of very clever gimmicks.
  • Their tendency not to include the actual gimmick in the package but give directions on how to make one (and quite often the needed materials), they have become known as the arts and crafts magic company.
  • What makes Sharpie Through Bill just a little different is that you only get the DVD. No materials are provided for construction. However, you most likely already have everything you need to make the gimmick. Also, a lot of Sansmind gimmicks are labor intensive. This one is not. It is simple and easy to make.

Since David Copperfield performed Timothy Wenk’s Misled a few years ago one of his specials, the bill penetration has been a popular plot. Although you can only use this gimmick to do the second phase of Misled, there are some definite advantages. You don’t have to ring the gimmick in. It is an integral part of the Sharpie which is always attached. Sansmind says that the pen can be passed out for examination after with only a small chance of the gaff being seen. I would suggest an alternative. Perform a card routine where a card must be signed. Hand the Sharpie to your spectator, let him uncap the pen, sign the card and recap. Leave the pen on the table and perform the card trick. After another trick or two, borrow a bill and perform Sharpie Through Bill. The spectator has already freely handled the pen at a time when there is zero heat on it. There should be no pressure at this point to examine the pen.

Considering the ease of construction and the practicality of the gimmick, I think this is actually one of Sansmind’s better products. I can see making up several gimmicks so the spectator could take his choice of pens. It would not take long to do and would add another level of deception.

If you have been a fan of Misled or even if this is a new plot line for you, you will have fun with this. Plus, once you make the gimmick, it could last you for years. Carry your sharpie in our pocket at all times. There is always some use you have for a Sharpie when performing. Then, you are ready for this killer effect.

Conclusion: Good value for the buck. Easy to make and do. Recommended
