The Hype:

WILD ‘WAVE - Part Eight-Card Brainwave (with ten cards).  Part Wild Card (red spot cards change into a Spade Royal Flush).  And, of course, Poker.  A riddle inside a mystery wrapped in an enigma—sort of.

WHAT HAPPENS: You show a small packet of cards, each one taken from a different casino, and explain that you like to take a memento from each place you visit. Spreading these cards face down on the table, you let your spectator select one. After collecting up the cards they didn’t pick, you show that they are all low value, red spot cards. Incredibly the card they (freely) chose is shown to be the lone, high value black card.

Offering to take this a step further you deal out the remaining cards, completing a five card poker hand for your spectator, as well as one for yourself.

When you flip yours over it is revealed that you inexplicably have a STRAIGHT - a killer hand in Poker!

But sadly that means nothing, because when they turn their hand face up, it reveals A ROYAL FLUSH IN SPADES!

Everything is examinable - nothing to hide.

Everything about Wild ‘Wave is quintessential Bannon - wringing multiple phases of shocking magic from just a handful of cards… eliminating almost ALL of the sleight of hand that other similar tricks use… ending completely, squeaky clean. When you’re doing a John Bannon packet trick you KNOW you’re delivering the goods. :)

My Take:

John is probably my favorite card magician alive today. Unlike masters like Shin Lim, John draws from the style of Nick Trost and teaches you miracles using a minimum of sleights. You always get a bewildering trick without the knucklebusting. Can't palm or second deal? No worry because you won't find them in a Bannon packet trick.

The quality of the cards is, as usual, superb and printed by the USPCC. People like to see cards from different casinos. For some, it brings back a memory of a great time they had in Vegas. And if not, the display of ten different backs is pretty eye catching.

The ad says there is one sleight which is easy to do. However, I would not even call this a sleight because no tricky move is required. He just takes a count you probably already know and alters it just a bit. He has been very creative in the past in taking old moves and giving them a new face. If you are familiar with his Bullet Party variation of the Elmsley count, you know just how effective his variations can be. He says in all his time doing cards. he has never seen anyone using this variation. It is easy to do and a real fooler.

I love the new packaging on packet tricks from Big Blind Media, You get the black plastic wallet that you have always gotten but then you get a second layer of protection in the faux hardback book. This allows you to not only protect your cards but make sure you remember which trick those cards actually belong to. (How many cards do you have in your magic junk drawer that you just don't remember which routine they go with?) Plus, with this format, the tricks will fit right into your bookshelf. I expect to see some other companies copy this idea in the future (and, if they don't, they should. It adds a whole new layer of class to your collection.)

With the amount of new effects that John turns out, he must not have much time for sleeping. Plus he publishes a new, very involved trick in every other issue of Genii. This is just another reason that I love John's work. Recommended.
